Starrof the Wisconsin 30th. Prior to the War, he had been editor of the Hudson North Star in Hudson, Wisconsin but mustered in as an officer with the 30th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, serving as the Quartermaster. The regiment was based at Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin and organized in the fall of 1862. He was relieved of duty with the 30th Wisconsin in February of 1864 due to a promotion.
