They were viewed as a threat doctrinally, as many were "general" baptists, and therefore not in conformity to the Westminster Confession on soteriology; reputationally, as their evangelistic efforts were often in the mode of the New Lights, pre camp meeting style; and practically, as emerging Baptist Congregations were bringing suit against parishes for their part of the church
